Belize is a net energy importer. The main import is oil. In
1998 Belize imported an estimated 2,000 bpd of oil.
A petroleum consortium comprising Petrofina (Belgium), Deminex (Germany),
Dover Technology (United States), and Magellan Petroleum (Australia) planned
to drill offshore near Glover's Reef, part of a prized barrier-reef system.
The project was delayed by controversy over an environmental impact statement
and an environmental management plan.
In 1998, installed electric capacity was 35 MW. The principal source of electric
power is currently thermal power.
